Spring Cheer

J-Foto.com Blog Photo Blog

Goodbye longjohns at last. Winter has gone and spring is here. What a relief! The cold and I just do not seem to agree so much anymore, (unless I’m on my snowboard).

As you may be aware, hanami flower viewing is a feature of spring in Japan (as it is elsewhere too, I believe). The most popular and visible of the flowers that come into bloom are the sakura cherry blossoms.

These days hanami has a broader yet narrower translation than just flower viewing. It could be defined as inebriation from and under cherry blossoms.

Since I presently don’t drink alcohol hanami was not quite the festive occasion that it has been in previous years. Nonetheless I did get intoxicated by the beauty of the blossoms and the magical weather. Happy viewing!

The Quiet Achiever

J-Foto.com Blog Photo Blog

The cherry blossoms have been and gone and another school year has begun. This year they’re getting ’serious’ about teaching English in the schools. What does that mean? A textbook has been introduced nationwide for grades 5 & 6. Beginning in 2011 I believe, the classroom teachers will have to teach English also. That should be interesting!

Enough about school. This entry is about daycare and kindergarten and Reni in particular. Last month Reni ‘graduated’ from Mebae, the daycare centre that he and Syd attended. (Syd still goes there.) To mark the occasion there was a ceremony followed by a small party. At the ceremony the children did a singing presentation in which they recalled their memories of daycare during the four seasons. They also received a certificate each and presented flowers to the staff. Reni was one of the first to present flowers. He gave them to the maintenance man and bus driver, who also happens to be the boss’ husband. Though it may seem a bit strange for a boy to be giving a man flowers, it is clear from the photo that they were warmly received.

Moving on to kindergaten, last week the official entrance ceremony for it was held. (Some of the children, including Reni, had already begun attending prior to this.) The kindergarten is next door to one of the schools where I work. The principal of the school is also in charge of the kindergarten so he was in attendance and made a short speech (which one of the kids parrotted almost entirely). Beginning from yesterday Reni has to leave home bright and early at 7:15 to walk to kindy with the school kids. It’s a long way for a little boy (half an hour at least!) but he’s taking it all in his stride.

I should also mention that last month Reni also participated in a concert for Yamaha Music School that he attends on Saturday. Unfortunately this year I was not able to attend however Yoko kindly took a video of the performance for me. There was a slight mix-up during the organ recital that Reni’s class performed but Reni was not one of the students that made the mistake. He did a great job! Although he rarely practices, Reni seems to be enjoying learning music and progressing steadily. (Thanks Mum for your kind support!)

We may be doting parents (oya-baka in Japanese) but we’re very proud of Reni, our quiet achiever.

2 is terrific, not terrible!

J-Foto.com Blog Photo Blogparty funOn Friday, April 3rd, Syd our little wild boar turned two. To celebrate the occasion we went to a local pizza and pasta restaurant. It was funny that Yamaguchi-sensei, an old workmate of mine who kindly gave us the jungle-gym the boys like to play on, was with his family sitting at the table next to ours.

J-Foto.com Blog Photo Blogfun with MumAfter dinner we returned to the apartment for dessert. Syd, like Reni, is a big fan of the Thomas The Tank Engine series. He has difficulty pronouncing Thomas’ name however so maybe that’s why he prefers Percy. So although Percy is engine number 6, we got Syd a chocolate cream cake with Percy decorated on it. He (and we) loved it. Yummy!

Riding with Ampan-man

J-Foto.com Blog Photo Blog

Last week Syd, Reni and I took the day off to ride the ‘Ampan-man’ train. Ampan-man is a popular kid’s animation character. Literally translated he is the red bean paste (an) bread (pan but pronounce pun) man. Ampan-man has numerous other ‘bread friends’ too.

J-Foto.com Blog Photo BlogJ-Foto.com Blog Photo BlogThe Ampan-man train is a commuter train but with a special carriage decorated with Ampan-man animation and equipped with a play area for kids. The train runs from Tokushima to Takamatsu, the capital of neighbouring Kagawa Prefecture or Awa-Ikeda, located in the west of Tokushima Prefecture and in the heart of Shikoku’s mountainous interior. Reni decided he’d like to go to the mountains rather than the city so we took the train to Awa-Ikeda instead of Takamatsu.

In the morning before we caught the train we went for a walk to a park and bought ‘bento’ lunchboxes. By the time we got on the train we’d just about finished our food. All the exercise had worn Syd out so he fell asleep in no time. While he napped Reni and I enjoyed the view, passing many cherry blossoms in bloom.

J-Foto.com Blog Photo BlogJ-Foto.com Blog Photo BlogFrom Awa-Ikeda we took another train to Oboke, an area famous for whitewater rafting on the Yoshino River. There were gorgeous views from the station looking over the soft pink petals of the blossoms to the torquoise water of the river below. A lady kindly took a photo of us (below) while we waited for our pick-up.

From the station we got a ride to a hotel where we enjoyed an onsen hot-spring bath. Syd and Reni really love these baths and I must say I am quite partial to them too. Because we arrived in the early afternoon on a weekday there were very few other people there. It was very relaxing and refreshing.

J-Foto.com Blog Photo BlogJ-Foto.com Blog Photo BlogFollowing our soak the hotel mini-bus driver kindly returned us to Oboke Station in time to get a train to connect with our return train to Tokushima. There were no other children on the train in the Ampan-man play area on the way back so the boys got to play as freely as they pleased and I got to take a nap. It was the perfect way to end a great day!
